Best French Open rivalries
Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert
Included in Martina Navratilova's 43-37 head-to-head record against Chris Evert were two wins over her rival at the French Open: one in the 1984 final and one in the 1987 semifinals. But Evert beat Navratilova three times in their three other finals appearances - 1975, 1985 and 1986 - and captured a record seven singles titles at Roland Garros.
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer
The top rivalry of this generation of men's tennis players, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have battled more times at the French Open than at any other tournament. Their last three Roland Garros meetings have come in the championship match, with Nadal winning each time. While both have career Grand Slams to their credit, Nadal holds a 16-8 head-to-head edge, while Federer has 16 major titles to the Spaniard's nine.
Steffi Graf and Monica Seles
The first-ever meeting between Steffi Graf and Monica Seles provided a taste of the rivalry that would develop between the two talents. In 1989, Graf topped Seles, who was making her first Slam appearance at 15, in three sets in the semis. The next year Seles captured her first major title with a straight-set win over Graf in the final. One of their most thrilling battles came in 1992 when Seles outlasted Graf by a 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 score for her third straight Roland Garros crown. And it's fitting their final meeting came at the same place as their first, with Graf pulling out a semi win in 1999. At the end of their careers, Graf held a 10-5 head-to-head edge, but who knows how many more times they would have met had Seles not been stabbed for a crazed Graf fanatic in 1993.
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Steffi Graf
While Steffi Graf beat Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 28 of the 36 times they played each other, that edge is reduced to 12-4 on clay and just 3-2 at the French Open. Sanchez Vicario upset Graf in three sets in the 1989 final the first time they played each other at Roland Garros and soundly beat her in the 1991 semis in their next French Open meeting. But the 1992 semis and 1995 finals went Graf's way, as did a thrilling final in 1996 in which Graf prevailed by a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-8 score.
Jean Borotra, Rene Lacoste and Henri Cochet
From 1922-1932, one of three French tennis players won every men's singles title except one: Henri Cochet won five times, beating Rene Lacoste twice in the final; Jean Borotra won twice, beating Lacoste once in the final; and Lacoste won three times, twice beating Borotra in the final.
