Bedard signs one-year deal with Pirates

DALLASErik Bedard signed a one-year, 4.5 million contract with the Pirates Wednesday. The Sox acquired the left-hander in a three-team deal at the trading deadline, sending three minor leaguers to the Dodgers and another to the Mariners.

With the Sox, Bedard posted a record of 1-2 with a 4.33 ERA in eight starts. His time with the Sox was uneven. He did not go more than six innings in any of his starts, but gave up more than three earned runs just once, a 4-0 loss to the Rangers on Aug. 22. He missed 16 days in September because of a sore knee, returning to face the Orioles on Sept. 20, lasting just 2 23 innings, tying John Danks for a major-league high 51 pitches in one inning in 2011.

The Sox re-signed lefty Andrew Miller Tuesday, but general manager Ben Cherington said they did not consider bringing back Bedard.

We didnt have a lot of substantive conversations with him, Cherington said. We enjoyed our time with Erik. It didnt end up the way he wanted. It didnt end the way we wanted it. Good guy and a talented guy. It seems like he got himself in a good spot.

For two months of Bedards service, the Sox gave up:

Right-hander Juan Rodriguez, who turns 23 next week, and was a combined 3-5 (4.38) between Sox and Dodgers Single-A teams.

Right-hander Stephen Fife, who turned 25 in October and went a combined 14-4 between Sox and Dodgers Double-A teams. The Dodgers added him to their 40-man roster after the season.

Catcher Tim Federowicz, who turned 24 in August, and was considered highly by the Sox for his defense. He hit .277 with eight home runs and 52 RBI in 90 games for Double-A Portland, and .325 with six home runs and 17 RBI in 25 games for the Dodgers Triple-A Albuquerque, throwing out a combined 37 percent (30 of 81) of attempted basestealers.

Outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang, who turns 24 in February, who hit a combined .302 with 18 home runs and 86 RBI between the Sox and Mariners Double-A teams.
