Thornton auctioning off final game skates for charity

Some skates go to Toronto, where they can be bronzed and displayed in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Bobby Orr’s skates are there. It’s pretty cool.

Shawn Thornton said that when he finished his career, his skates would go elsewhere: the trash. True to his word, he threw his skates in a trash barrel at BB&T center after he’d played his final game last week.

Thornton is as charitable as he is funny (actually, charitable probably wins out there), so he is now auctioning off the skates after the Panthers went full Constanza and dug them out of the trash.

Through Tuesday evening, people can bid on the skates on eBay, with the proceeds going to the Shawn Thornton Foundation. The skates are Reebok Ribcor in size 10, in case anyone actually wants to use them.

Also, Eli Manning is in no way associated with this, so the skates were actually used in a game.
