After covering sports for over 20 years it is easy to become tainted.
You have run-ins with players you have criticized, you can no longer root for the team you cheered for growing up because it would prevent you from doing your job and you soon realize the heroes you worshiped over the years do not live up to your childhood perception of them.
Fortunately for me, mine have: Dave Cowens, John Havliceck, Jo Jo White, Steve Grogan, Tommy Heinsohn and Rico Petrocelli are all on a long list. But, I digress.
It is easy in this business to want something bad or controversial to happen, murder aside. It’s good for the talk business when fans are ticked off. That’s when our ratings go up. Today is actually a good day for us because everyone is shocked and angry that Donny Sweeney did not fire Claude Julien. But, what would have been good for the Bruins would have been for Sweeney to fire Claude.
WHAT IS DONNY THINKING?
This team has mediocre talent at best and that is on Sweeney. But the talent was good enough to get into the playoffs the last two seasons and Claude failed to do that. He cannot motivate this team. The Bruins obviously do not respond to him. So why is he still here?
In the Celtics final game the Green came back from a 26-point deficit after Brad Stevens talked to them during halftime against Miami. Stevens said that there were players in the building who raised a lot of banners and asked the Celts if this was the way they wanted to end the season. The team responded and held Miami to a record five points in the third quarter as they rallied to win the game.
Claude could not do that with this Bruins’ team.
So, Donny enjoy your final season with the Bruins because your decision to keep Claude just made Cam’s decision to get rid of you next year that much easier.
