Bruins lose Griffith on waivers to Maple Leafs

BRIGHTON -- The Bruins were probably expecting to lose at least one of the three players they placed on waivers at noontime on Monday, and that’s exactly what happened as the Toronto Maple Leafs claimed forward Seth Griffith.

Griffith, 23, was a former fifth-round pick of the Bruins and had posted 6 goals and 11 points in 34 games over the last couple of seasons. The 5-foot-9, 192-pound Griffith was coming off a strong season in Providence last year while routinely skating with Frank Vatrano, and posted 24 goals and 77 points for the P-Bruins.

Clearly some of his young P-Bruins teammates were disappointed as Malcolm Subban authored this crestfallen tweet this after hearing the news:

But Griffith was being passed by young forwards like Austin Czarnik, Danton Heinen and Jake DeBrusk on the Bruins organizational depth chart, and had size, strength and speed limitations in his game that made it a question if he’ll ever break through at the NHL level. Clearly the hands and shot are big strengths for the Ontario native, and now he’ll get another NHL crack with a Toronto team that he probably grew up rooting for.

Both Tyler Randell and Tim Schaller passed through waivers on Tuesday at noontime, and have reported to the AHL training camp in Providence along with the rest of the main camp cuts.
