Horford's work on Tuesday ‘a good sign' as he recovers from concussion

The road to recovery has been a rocky one for Boston Celtics big man Al Horford who remains in the NBA’s concussion protocol program.

After telling reporters on Monday that Horford had “not advanced” in the concussion protocol program, Stevens said prior to tonight’s game at Washington that the 6-foot-10 center had a good day on Tuesday.

“He did a little bit more after we left,” Stevens said. “That was a positive. He did more (Tuesday). That’s a good sign.”

But Stevens understands that it will take more than just one good day before Horford is cleared to resume playing.

“The process restarts itself when you have symptoms, when you start the different level of exercises,” Stevens said. “He’s had to restart a few times. It’s how he feels after yesterday’s work and after today’s work and then can you progress to what’s next.”

Horford started Boston’s first three games, averaging 12.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists while helping Boston get off to a 2-1 start.

Without him in the lineup, the Celtics’ defense has been among the league’s worst.

Since Horford has been out, the Celtics defense has ranked near or at the bottom in several defensive categories such as points allowed (117.0, 29th), opponent field goal percentage (.482, 26th), opponent 3-point shooting (.416, 27th), defensive rating (114.5, 29th) and rebounding percentage (.459, 30th).
