Celtics close to signing Terry

A league source has confirmed that the Celtics are close to signing Jason Terry to a multi-year deal starting at the mid-level exception.

The number of years is still being ironed out, the source said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the deal is still in the negotiating phase.

Adding Terry would not necessarily take the Celtics out of the running for Ray Allen, who remains the C's top target along with Brandon Bass.

Boston envisions a four-guard rotation of Rajon Rondo and Avery Bradley starting, with Allen and Terry in the backcourt with Terry being able to play both guard positions.

Of course, the Celtics will have to fend off the Los Angeles Clippers who have made a strong push for Terry and will offer a comparable deal, as will the Dallas Mavericks, his team this past season.

A league official said Terry was impressed by the way the C's fought through adversity and came within one game -- make that one quarter -- of knocking off the eventual NBA champion Miami Heat.

It was apparent that the C's needed one more impact player to potential get over the hump.

"And he's definitely of the mindset that, 'hey, maybe it's me. Maybe I can be that guy that gets them over the top again," the league official said.
