Jae Crowder's mother died the night of his trade from Celtics to Cavs

A trade from the Boston Celtics to the Cleveland Cavaliers was not the most devastating news that Jae Crowder received on Tuesday.

Not even close.

Crowder's mother, Helen Thompson, 51, died of cancer on Tuesday night.

A source close to Crowder confirmed his mother's death to cleveland.com.

Thompson, 51, lived outside of Atlanta. Earlier this month on Twiter, Crowder asked for prayers for his family:

Crowder, Isaiah Thomas, Ante Zizic were traded to the Cavs for Kyrie Irving. Word of the trade came down at about 6:30 p.m. and the Celtics and Cavs made it official shortly after 8 p.m.

God blessed me with a second mother and I'm forever grateful for that. So many things that I will carry with me through life. One lesson she showed me more so than taught me was how to be strong at times when I felt weak. There were times when I struggled to remain strong while being a mother to just one child and I would think about her, who was a mother to five. Oh mama, I will miss calling you to vent, coming in your room to lay in bed and tell you my secrets. I will miss waiting for you to come in town to scream and act crazy with me at the games.
