Rondo: Celtics should ‘definitely' retire Ray Allen's No. 20

On Tuesday, Rajon Rondo gave a hilarious and kind of insulting reaction to the news that Ray Allen had retired.

“I thought he’d been retired,” Rondo said.

It’s no secret that Rondo and Allen -- or Allen and any of his Celtics teammates -- were particularly close. Given a day to think of something nicer to say, however, Rondo did just that.

Asked ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with the Celtics whether the C’s should retire Allen’s No. 20, the Bulls point guard said yes.

“Without a doubt,” Rondo said. “He’s done a lot for this organization -- not the way things ended with Ray -- but he helped put a banner up there. He’s a future Hall of Famer as well, so we’ve got to pay him his respects.”

Allen spent five seasons with the Celtics, winning the NBA championship with the team in the 2007-08 season.
