A day after reports surfaced the Lakers were interested in former Rajon Rondo, it appears the New Orleans Pelicans are close to signing the former Celtics point guard to a one-year deal, according to ESPN.

More from Zach Lowe’s report:

One source briefed on the meeting said it was "excellent," and the Pelicans and Rondo could begin negotiations as soon as Thursday, as there's enthusiasm on both sides to try and work out an agreement, league sources told ESPN.

The Pelicans re-signed point guard Jrue Holiday to a five-year, $125 million deal but could move Holiday off the ball on occasion, Lowe reports. Rondo and Pelicans center DeMarcus Cousins played together with the Sacramento Kings in the 2015-16 season, one of three teams Rondo has played for since leaving the Celtics via trade to Dallas in 2015.
