Thomas recovering, but still out against San Antonio

Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens said Isaiah Thomas’ right groin injury is feeling better, but not good enough for him to join the team in time for Wednesday night’s game at San Antonio.

Stevens said Thomas is “still a little stiff” and then added, “but he’s progressed well.”

The timetable that Thomas and the Celtics are shooting for now is Friday’s home game against Charlotte.

“That would be the hope,” Stevens told reporters on Tuesday. “But that’s not set in stone by any means.”

Wednesday’s game against San Antonio will be the fourth straight Boston will play without Thomas, with the Celtics losing two of the previous three.

As Thomas pointed out earlier,  one of the positives with him being out for a few games is it will allow his body some much-needed downtime to rest some of the many aches and pains he has played through this season.

It also offers some players a chance to play more minutes, among them being Marcus Smart.

“We miss Isaiah. Don’t get that wrong,” Smart told reporters on Tuesday. “He’s a big key point for our team. But I’ve been developing well with his absence. That’s only going to make the team better when he’s back.”

Thomas averages 26.0 points per game along with 6.2 assists, both tops among all Celtics.
