Beltran traded to Giants

Carlos Beltran will be going to the San Francisco Giants. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets have agreed to trade Beltran and cash for pitching prospect Zack Wheeler.

The Red Sox were involved in talks with the Mets for the 34-year-old right fielder. Beltran is currently batting .289.391.513 with 15 HR and 30 doubles. A switch-hitter, he has hit .313.428.504 against lefties.

The Mets have been seeking top prospects for Beltran. Because of the number of teams involved, Sean McAdam did not expect the Red Sox to pay the Mets' growing asking price.

Beltran is due 18.5 million for the 2011 season before becoming a free agent at the end of the year. A clause in his contract prevents teams from offering him arbitration, so no team can obtain compensatory draft picks if he signs elsewhere.

There is a 24-hour waiting period before the trade can be made official.
