Red Sox designate O'Sullivan for assignment, recall Hernandez

The Red Sox have decided Sean O'Sullivan's not the answer for the final spot in the starting rotation . . . though we don't yet know who they consider the answer to be.

After his second straight shaky, albeit victorious, performance on Sunday, the Sox designated O'Sullivan for assignment, removing him not just from the team but from the 40-man roster. With an off day on Thursday, O'Sullivan's turn in the rotation won't come up until Saturday. But they could skip it over, keeping the other four pitchers on four days' rest thanks to the off day. And if they do that -- because they have another off day next Monday -- they wouldn't need the fifth starter again until a week from Thursday against Colorado. That would give them plenty of time to decide if Eduardo Rodriguez or Joe Kelly are ready to return to the rotation in O'Sullivan's slot.

In the meantime, infielder Marco Hernandez is being brought up to fill O'Sullivan's roster spot . . . not the first, and probably not the last, time Hernandez has ridden the Boston-Pawtucket shuttle this year. He is hitting .333 (31-for-93) with a .386 on-base percentage for the PawSox.  He was 1-for-2 in his first stint with Boston last month.
