Red Sox say little about Thornburg's injury

BOSTON — Tyler Thornburg again isn’t throwing, his shoulder bothering him. He’s been listed on the disabled list all season with a shoulder impingement.

A month ago, the Red Sox said they were considering all possibilities for the reliever’s shoulder. That they knew the injury began with an impingement and shoulder weakness, but they suspected more was going on.

A month later, nothing has been made public about Thornburg’s situation. Whether an impingement is all that’s in play, or what else he might be dealing with, nothing is clear.

All that’s known is he is again not throwing and his shoulder bothers him.

“He's not picked up a ball the last couple days,” manager John Farrell said Tuesday. “The symptoms have not completely subsided. We are continuing to gather as much information as possible on what's going. I know that’s been a recurring answer to the question about Tyler. But based on the information we've gotten, adjustments made to his rehab schedule and plan, it will rear its head again. We're continuing to find out as much information as possible.

Surgery, Farrell said has not been recommended at this point, but he noted he doesn’t have a clear-cut answer.

Back on May 13, Farrell explained that the Red Sox were trying to get something of a clear-cut answer.

"Everything is being explored,” Farrell said a month ago. “Whether that’s further imaging, whether that’s testing done in certain ways or whether there's nerve testing that is explored, we're trying to exhaust all avenues that are available to us.

“As you watch him throw, as you take the feedback he gives you from the work sessions — we know it started with an impingement and shoulder weakness,” Farrell continued. “That’s been strengthened, that’s been focused on. Yet we're a couple months down the line here, and still dealing with some things that aren't allowing him to get over the hump and back on the mound. You seek all potential options available to you.”
