Byrd, now a free agent, spent 34 games with the Red Sox this season, getting time in the team's outfield when it was severely depleted because of injury. He batted .270 in 100 at-bats after being acquired from the Cubs for prospects Michael Bowden and Hunter Cervenka.

Byrd was designated for assignment earlier this month and subsequently released.
