Cherington covers the bases

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- This week marks the official start of Ben Cherington's second season as general manager of the Red Sox. A few days before pitchers and catchers begin their first workouts, Cherington met with reporters Saturday and covered a wide range of topics.

"It's no fun, that's for sure. I think everyone was excited to get to spring training because of that reason - to fully put 2012 behind us and try to move forward and talk about something new. I've said before its a collective failure, but I take more responsibility than anyone for it.

"Last year, we were a long way from living up to what we should be on the field and off the field. It's up to us to make the Red Sox what they should be again. Some of that has started and will continue here in spring training."
