Cherington: Sox looking for lefty bat to back up first base

PROVIDENCEThe Red Sox are looking for a left-handed bat off the bench who could also back up at first base.

Wed like to find someone like that, said general manager Ben Cherington at a Red Sox Town Hall meeting Thursday night at La Salle Academy. Well look at some options between now and spring training perhaps and if we cant find anything, it may turn into a spring training project and keep looking then. Weve got some left-hand options for the outfield but if we can add someone to do that at first base . . . We signed Mark Hamilton to a minor-league deal, we may look at other options too and see whats out there and if we cant find anything again before spring training, well keep looking during spring training.

Either free agency or trade but nothing on the front burner right now. Well look at it.

Probably a question better answered once our rosters complete, said manager John Farrell. I dont know that were fully looking at our team as a finished product by any means. But whoever is on our roster were certainly going to make do with the guys that are here."

Cherington is comfortable overall with the bench.

We feel pretty good on the position player side of things, he said. Weve got some infield depth. Weve got catching depth. Weve got some outfield depth and if we can add a left-hand hitter, thatd be great. If not, well keep working on it. I would expect thered be two or three more additions to camp, probably more likely the non-roster variety. But we feel fairly good where we are.
