David Price fighting the clock in return from injury

BOSTON — Red Sox manager John Farrell acknowledged on Friday the clock is working against David Price, who did not throw from flat ground because of continued stiffness. The last time Price has thrown on flat ground was Tuesday, the team said.

It’s been apparent for some time that the clock was working against Price, but a public acknowledgment of the obvious has become a notable thing around Fenway Park.

"The concern is just the time,” Farrell said. “That’s probably the biggest one. But I can't say that there's additional concern because something else has happened. That's not part of it. It's just that we, he needs additional time to let everything quiet down in it's entirety. When you look at the calendar, that's the one thing that kind of comes to mind. But we can't rush it. We have to do what's best and what's right for David Price.”

The minor league season ends about a month earlier than the major league season, leaving reduced options for Price to face hitters next month.

Farrell was asked about the location of the stiffness Price has been feeling and gave a non-answer — which is to say, a typical answer when it comes to Price's health. Price is on the disabled list because of a bothersome left elbow.

“The other day I said he felt a little stiff during his throwing,” Farrell said. “That still exists so we’re not going to push to the point where this ends up being maybe a little bit more so we’re holding off right now.

“I can’t say it’s been symptom-free entirely. But as it’s not dissipated completely, just felt like let’s stay the course with treatment to try to get that resolved and get that out of there before looking to resume for one and then build up past that.”
