A's knock around lifeless Matsuzaka, Red Sox lose, 6-1

OAKLAND -- Call it Revenge of the Alumni.

Josh Reddick and Brandon Moss, two former Red Sox outfielders getting their chance to play more on the West Coast, combined to drive in five runs as the Oakland A's beat the Red Sox, 6-1.

Reddick hit his 19th homer of the season in the first and Moss added his ninth homer, a three-run shot, in the second. Daisuke Matsuzaka endured one of his worst -- and shortest -- outings since joining the Red Sox six years ago, charged with five runs in an inning-plus of work.

Matsuzaka was fresh off a strong start last week against Toronto when he yielded a single run in 5 23 innings. But Matsuzaka faced nine hitters and six reached before Bobby Valentine used a quick hook to lift him.

Clayton Mortensen contributed five innings of long relief, allowing just one run, but the Sox, who took a 1-0 lead in the first when Dustin Pedroia singled home Daniel Nava, didn't score over the final eight innings.

After a weekend series in Seattle that saw them go 3-for-27 with runners in scoring position, the Sox again failed to come up with any timely hits. Pedroia's run-scoring single in the first was the only one, in fact, as the Sox were 1-for-6 in that department.

The loss dropped the Sox to 7-18 in Oakland since July 26, 2006.
