ARLINGTON, Tex. -- John Lackey has seldom pitched well in Rangers Ballpark at Arlington and a new season did nothing to change that pattern.
Lackey was pounded for 10 hits -- seven of them for extra bases -- and nine runs in just 3 23 innings, setting the tone for a humiliating 12-5 Red Sox defeat to the Texas Rangers.
Lackey entered the game with a 6.11 ERA here and managed to drive that number upward with his performance. The crowning shot off him was a grand slam by former teammate Adrian Beltre in the fourth.
The Red Sox have lost the first two games of the season for the first time since 2005 and have given up 21 runs in doing so.
David Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the second and knocked in a run on a groundout in the fourth, giving him 1,004 RBI as a DH, surpassing Edgar Martinez for most all-time at that position. Jacoby Ellsbury added a two-run shot to right in the sixth.
