BOSTON -- Even before he underwent an MRI Wednesday to determine the severity of his latissimus strain, the Red Sox had already decided to put Jon Lester on the disabled list.

It was kind of . . . a no-brainer, manager Terry Francona said before Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Blue Jays. He didnt put up much of a fight.

After the game, the Sox issued a statement from team medical director Dr. Tom Gill:

Jon Lester had an MRI today which confirmed the diagnosis of a latissimus strain. He will be treated with a period of rest from throwing, followed by progressive strengthening program. There is no specific timeframe for his return at this time. His status will be better defined following the All-Star break.

Lester, who is 10-4 with a 3.31 ERA in 18 starts this season, left Tuesdays game against the Blue Jays after the fourth inning. He had not given up a hit at the point, allowing just one walk.

Right-hander Scott Atchison was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Lesters spot on the roster. This is Atchisons fourth call-up this season. He has appeared in seven games for the Sox this season, spanning 13 13 innings, posting an ERA of 4.73.
