Lowe interested in returning to Red Sox

Derek Lowe would apparently like to return to the Red Sox. Whether the Red Sox want him to return is something still under discussion.
Lowe was designated for assignment by the Cleveland Indians Tuesday and is home in Fort Myers, Fla., working out and trying to stay ready.
The Indians have 10 days to either release Lowe, place him on waivers or trade him.
Given that Lowe has a 15 million salary for 2012, he's due approximately 5 million for the final two months. That makes it highly unlikely that they'll be able to deal him elsewhere without picking up the majority of the remaining money and it makes it almost certain that he'll clear waivers, since anyone putting in a claim would be responsible for the full 5 million.
Lowe has said that he would love to return to Boston, where he spent the best years of his career, from 1997 through 2004 before leaving as a free agent to pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
If Lowe were to clear waivers, he would become a free agent, with the Sox his team of choice. Should he clear, the Sox would be able to sign him for the pro-rated mininum of about 150,000 for the remainder of the season.
A baseball source indicated that the Sox were going over scouting reports on Lowe to determine. The source said the Sox would only be interested if the veteran righty were made affordable to them.
