Ortiz (Achilles) to sit for second straight game

BOSTON -- David Ortiz is absent from the Red Sox lineup for the second straight game, as he still has some soreness in his injured achilles.

Before Sunday afternoon's game, Ortiz said that he will make a decision before the end of the day to shut himself down for the season.
Ortiz met with manager Bobby Valentine and general manager Ben Cherington after Saturday night's game in Valentine's office.
"I talked to him late last night, probably at about 12:30, and he didn't think today would be a good day to play," said Valentine before Sunday afternoon's game. "I don't know that we have to go any further than that."

Valentine said that they are at the point, now, where the organization has to start thinking about shutting down Ortiz if the soreness in his achilles doesn't go away.

"We're probably there," said Valentine. "We're just giving him a couple days to see. He said that the practice and game, there's just that little level of adrenaline that differentiates. When he hit the double on Friday night and he turned to second, he was uncomfortable, where he was comfortable doing those things in practice.

"We're definitely not going to do anything to jeopardize David's career. David totally wants to do everything he can to be part of this team for as long as he can this year and into the future. So, that's what we're dealing with."
