CHICAGO -- The Red Sox acquired the veteran starting pitcher they were looking for on Sunday, picking up Mariners left-hander Erik Bedard in a three-team deal that was completed moments before the 4 p.m. trade deadline.
The Sox will also acquire pitcher Josh Fields -- Seattle's first-round pick in2008, and currently pitching at Class AAA -- from the Mariners' farmsystem. Earlier reports that Boston would receive Class AAA outfielder Trayvon Robinson from the Dodgers'system are incorrect.
In return, the Sox are parting with catcher Tim Federowicz, pitchers Juan Rodriguez and Stephen Fife, and outfielder Chih Hsein Chiang from their farm system. The Mariners receive Robinson and Chiang and the Dodgers receive Federowicz, Rodriguez and Fife.
Bedard, 32, was one of baseball's best left-handed starters in 2006 and '07 with the Orioles; he went 15-11 with a 3.76 ERA in '06 and 13-5 with a 3.16 ERA in '07. He was traded to the Mariners before the 2008 season, just before his arbitration-eligible salary increased by 100 percent, but has since been plagued by injuries. He suffered a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder in 2009 and missed a season-and-a-half while recuperating from surgery. He has a combined record of 15-14 during his time with Seattle.
The Mariners declined an 8 million option on his 2011 contract and re-signed him to an incentive-laden, one-year deal that only guarantees him 1 million.
With many scouts, including those from the Red Sox, in attendance, Bedard had an horrific outing against Tampa Bay last Friday night (1 13 innings, 3 hits, 4 walks, 5 runs) in his first start after a month on the disabled list because of a sprained left knee. It was thought his performance killed other teams' interest in Bedard, but the Red Sox turned back to him when their proposed deal for Oakland's Rich Harden fell through early Sunday morning.
