CLEVELANDThe Red Sox team that showed up in Cleveland Monday night was far different than the one that was here earlier this year. The results, however, were the same.
The Sox lost a one-run lead in the eighth inning, and fell 3-2 to the Indians. Boston still has not won a game at Progressive Field this season after being swept in Cleveland in early April.
On Monday night, two of the best right-handed prospects to emerge from the Red Sox system in recent years faced off against each other, with Clay Buchholz and Justin Masterson nearly matching each other pitch for pitch.
Buchholz went 7 13 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. He threw 94 pitches (55 strikes), an economical decrease from the 127 pitches he threw in his last outing against the Tigers.
Masterson, who was packaged to Cleveland at the 2009 trading deadline for catcher Victor Martinez, went 7 23 innings, giving up two runs on four hits, two walks, and two hit batters, with three strikeouts. He threw 112 pitches, 70 strikes.
Buchholz left with one out in the eighth inning and the tying run on second base, giving way to Daniel Bard, who got pinch-hitter Carlos Santana to pop up to Kevin Youkilis for the second out. But Michael Brantleys RBI single tied the game, and Asdrubal Cabreras subsequent RBI double put the Indians ahead, 3-2.
Boston Red Sox
Carl Crawford scored both Sox runs. He hit his second home run of the season in the fifth inning.
In the fourth, with one out, Crawford was safe on a single to shortstop. He took second on Jarrod Saltalamacchias groundout and scored on Dustin Pedroias single to right field. It was Pedroias first RBI since May 2, a span of 16 games.
Cabrera went 3-for-4 for the Indians, with his tenth home run of the season, leading off the fourth. It was Cabreras seventh consecutive hit, including his 5-for-5 showing Sunday against the Reds.
Pedroia left the game in the eighth inning as he stumbled rounding second base on Adrian Gonzalezs single to right.
