Red Sox infielder Rutledge has hip surgery and is done for the year

BOSTON — As the Red Sox get some reinforcements back in September, one infielder is lost for the remainder of the season. Josh Rutledge underwent hip surgery recently, a team source said.

Rutledge had a tough season health-wise. He had a concussion as well as the hip issue. He hit .224 with a .297 on-base percentage in 37 games and 118 plate appearances.

There is a positive buried in the rules for Rutledge in a disappointing year: his Rule 5 status carries over into 2018 because he did not spend 90 days on the active list. That means the Red Sox would again have to keep Rutledge on the 25-man roster next year or offer him back to the Rockies.

Rutledge is arbitration eligible, but he cannot be non-tendered or released without being offered back to the Rockies. Were that to happen, he would have the right to elect free agency.
