Red Sox option Bard to Pawtucket

BOSTON -- Daniel Bard's meltdown Sunday in Toronto is not being treated by the Red Sox as just one of those things.

The team optioned the struggling right-hander to Pawtucket on Tuesday, two days after his 1 13-inning, 6-walk, 2-hit batter disaster against the Blue Jays. There was no immediate word as to whether Bard will continue to start games with the PawSox, or if the move is the beginning of a transition back to the bullpen.

The Sox activated outfielder Darnell McDonald to replace Bard on the roster, but will need to find another starter by the weekend. The obvious choice is Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is completing his rehab after Tommy John surgery.

More to come . . .
