Red Sox still discussing Youkilis deal with five teams

Trade talks between the Red Sox and a handful of other teams regarding Kevin Youkilis is ongoing, a major league source indicated Sunday morning, but no deal is imminent.

Five teams -- the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves and a fifth unidentified team -- are evolving.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamondbacks, a second source revealed, while once involved in talks for the infielder, are no longer part of the mix.

Youkilis is owed slightly more than 6 million for the remainders of the 2012 season, plus a 1 million buyout on an option for 2013. The Red Sox are willing to take back most of the remaining salary obligation to facilitate a better player in return.

A source with knowledge of the talks indicated that the Sox aren't focused on a particular need, or even emphasizing prospects over current major leaguers. Rather, the idea is to get the best return available.

After being out of the lineup for the past three games in favor of Will Middlebrooks, Youkilis is in the lineup Sunday, playing third base.

"It's not directly related to anything other than than trying to win a ballgame'' said manager Bobby Valentine, "and keep him as sharp as possible.''
