The Red Sox -- now in fill-out-the-roster mode -- are interested in ex-Twins infielder Trevor Plouffe, according to the Boston Herald.

Plouffe, 30, was released by Minnesota at the end of last season and is a free agent. He's been the Twins' primary third baseman since 2013, though injuries limited him to 84 games in 2016. He's a lifetime .247/.308/.420 hitter, with a career OPS-plus of 99.

Plouffe has also played first base as well as third, along with short stints at second base, shorstop, and the two corner outfield spots. According to the Herald, he "is said to be open to the idea of a utility or even super-utility role".

The Herald reported Red Sox may be considering the right-handed-hitting Plouffe as "a complement to both first baseman Mitch Moreland, a lefty, and switch-hitting third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who is stronger from the left side of the plate".
