Report: MLB investigating waiver wire leaks

The long, strange winding road that is the Red Sox 2012 season took another weird turn today as it's been reported that Major League Baseball is investigating leaks about Boston's waiver wire activity.

According to WEEI's Rob Bradford, the league is investigating the unusually high number of reports regarding Red Sox waiver wire activity during the month of August. The report also notes, however, that the Red Sox are not under suspicion for leaking the information.

There were a number of reports last month about different Red Sox players being placed on waivers. It is common practice for teams to put many players through waivers after the non-waiver trade deadline in late July. Reason being, even if a player is claimed by another team, the waiving team has two days to work out a trade with the claiming team, or the player can be pulled back off of waivers.

If it was found that a team had leaked waiver wire information, by MLB rule, that team would be subject to fines.
