Ryan: Mike Maddux is my choice

If Bob Ryan were Ben Cherington, the Red Sox would have a manager right now.

And it's not a name most fans are thinking of.

"Personally? I'm kind of partial to Mike Maddux," the Boston Globe columnist told Michael Felger on 'Sports Sunday'. "He's done a terrific job as the pitching coach of the Texas Rangers and now pitching coaches are in vogue, all of a sudden.

"I would have loved to have seen them go after Padres manager Bud Black, by the way. I've been saying this from the start. Buf if you don't get Bud Black, and they're not even thinking about, then Mike Maddux wouldn't be a bad choice . . .

"But none of these names are going to thrill the average fan. I understand that. Then again, neither did Terry Francona eight years ago."
