TORONTO -- The Red Sox had extra work to do on Labor Day and it didn't end well for them.
Brett Lawrie's walkoff homer to straightaway center field off Dan Wheeler in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Toronto Blue Jays a 1-0 win.
The game wasn't the only thing the Sox lost on the day. Starting pitcher Josh Beckett was forced to come out of the game in the fourth inning after suffering a sprained right ankle.
In the bottom of the 10th, Jonathan Papelbon loaded the bases on a single and two walks, but fanned Adam Lind to leave three baserunners stranded.
The loss left the Red Sox 2 12 games behind first place New York in the American League East, their largest deficit since July 2.
It also marked the fourth time in the last 22 games that the Sox had been shutout and 11th time this season.

Beckett was overpowering in the early innings and showing no signs of physical issues. But after striking out six of the first 14 hitters he faced, Beckett seemed to stumble on the pitching rubber and called Terry Francona and trainer Mike Reinold to the mound.
Alfredo Aceves replaced Beckett and contributed 3 23 scoreless innings.
The Sox left two baserunners in the the third, fourth and seventh innings and were a combined 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Boston had seven hits, including three doubles.
