BOSTON -- Kyle Weiland's poor outing in Game 1 Monday -- 4 23 innings pitched, five earned runs allowed -- was more of the same for Red Sox starters this month.
In 18 games this month, during which the Red Sox are 4-14, their starters have gotten an out in the sixth inning just five times. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Red Sox won three of those.
For the month, Red Sox starters sport a collective ERA of 6.38. The starters have a 4-9 won-loss record in the month. Opposing hitters are batting .287 against Red Sox starters in September.
Just twice have Red Sox starting pitchers gone past the sixth inning, placing a toll on a bullpen that hasn't been able to respond.
(Monday's Game 1 was the exception to the rule, with Felix Doubront and Alfredo Aceves combining for 4 13 scoreless innings in defeat).
It hasn't helped that the Sox have habitually fallen behind early, either. In the first game defeat Monday, the Baltimore Orioles were ahead 2-0 and 5-1.
That marked the 10th time in the last 11 games that the Sox'copponents had scored first.

Weiland himself has made three starts this month and the Sox are winless in those three games.
