Varitek about to begin new life as Sox instructor

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Jason Varitek has reported to camp and will be working with players this week.

Farrell compared the impact he could have on players to that of Pedro Martinez, Varitek's former batterymate, who is also in camp this week.

"I would say it's very similar,'' said Farrell. "You've got two very successful players that have been leaders at their own right at their respective positions. They achieved team success as much as anyone who's ever played this game, particularly in this uniform. They're both so well respected and they want to give back.

"I know 'Tek, even in his last couple of years, Salty would pick his brain a lot and now 'Tek has the ability to that on a broader scale.''

In the meantime, former Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield will travel to Dunedin Monday to watch fellow knuckleballer Steven Wright, then come to camp and work with Wright for the rest of next week.
