Mid-afternoon, Francona was asked about the status of Kevin Youkilis, who has been battling a hip injury and a sports hernia, attempting to get back into the lineup.
"The writing is kind of on the wall," said Francona. "I don't think you're going to see him play again. I wish he could. He's tried so hard and been open to trying anything. I just don't think that's going to happen. I don't think it's 100 percent (certain that he won't play again), but it's getting there."
Then, shortly before gametime, it got there: The Sox placed Youkilis on the 60-day disabled list, effectively ending his season.
