Highlights from Bruins' 4-2 win over Kings

Share

FINAL SCORE: Bruins 4, Kings 2

IN BRIEF: Tied 2-2 late in the third, the Bruins got two goals in the final 90 seconds from Charlie McAvoy, then Patrice Bergeron (and a brilliant one-handed goal, at that), to sweep Southern California on back-to-back nights to kick off the first leg of this five-game road trip. Tuukka Rask (23 saves) stood on his head for a number of highlight-reel stops in what felt like one of his better nights in recent weeks. With the win, the Bruins move ahead of the Maple Leafs, who were idle tonight, for second place in the Atlantic Division.

FROM JOE HAGGERTY:

Streaky Jake DeBrusk was at it again with a goal in his third straight game, giving him a career-high 17 goals this season. DeBrusk was the recipient of a good bounce after Peter Cehlarik flicked a cross-ice pass his way amidst a transition play, and he made zero mistakes burying the chance for the game’s first goal. It was a very good opening period for that B’s second line, as David Krejci also had his own wide open chance later in the period, but couldn’t finish off the play to extend the lead. DeBrusk finished with a pair of shots on net, a pair of points and a plus-1 in 14:58 of ice time while putting together another strong effort.

It was a decent NHL debut for Karson Kuhlman, with a shot attempt that was blocked in 9:47 of ice time in the first period. He certainly looked fine skating with Trent Frederic and Joakim Nordstrom, as another variation of the third line that Boston has been searching for all season to find a working combination. There were no big mistakes, and Kuhlman really didn’t play too much in the third period when the game was on the ice, but all in all he was pretty strong without really showing too much of what he can specifically do on the ice.

There was another blown third period lead for the Bruins, but that was followed by a solid response where the B’s scored a pair of goals in the final couple of minutes in the third period to take home the win. Charlie McAvoy scored with little more than a minute to go in the third period, and then Bergeron scored one 36 seconds later to give the Bruins some insurance room. It’s always going to be tough for the Bruins when they make it difficult on themselves with the roller-coaster third periods, but they’re also getting increasingly comfortable in these too-close-for-comfort third periods, where crazy things are happening almost every time out.
