Jakub Lauko, Zane McIntyre shine in B's preseason win over Capitals

BOSTON -- The talking points from the Bruins' 2-1 shootout victory over the Capitals:

GOLD STAR: Jakub Lauko looked about as good as one could have expected an 18-year-old Czech kid making his NHL preseason debut after being a third-round pick a couple of months ago. He showed very good speed as he always does, but he also showed everything else that he’s bringing to the table. He left his skates to block a shot in the first period that clearly stung him a little bit, and then came back and sniped a goal from the high slot toward the end of the first period. He also drew a tripping call in the third that gave the B's a late power play to try and win the game. He showed enough to get a couple of shifts with David Krejci in the latter periods, and lived up to what’s been a strong early part of camp from him as a rookie to this process.

BLACK EYE: There weren’t any “bad” performances, but you expect to see a little more out of a guy like Daniel Winnik while he’s fighting for an NHL roster spot. Instead, he was mostly indistinguishable throughout the game and finished with two shots on net and slightly over percent (9-for-16) in the face-off circle while attempting to show he can play both center and left wing. Clearly, it’s early in training camp and that’s a tough time for veterans to really turn up the dial, but the odds are already against Winnik cracking the Bruins roster. So he’s going to have to some note-worthy things to even get considered for something in Boston once October rolls around.

TURNING POINT: The Bruins were down to a 5-on-3 deficit in the overtime after a tripping call on Ryan Fitzgerald and a too many men on the ice penalty, but they managed to get through it without giving up the game-winner. McIntyre made five saves in the overtime session to keep the Bruins in it while they were down players, and that allowed the Bruins to extend things to the shootout session where Danton Heinen snagged the game-winner. It certainly was a different look for a Bruins team that was missing most of their NHL roster, but their NHL guys stepped up and a couple of young kids – along with McIntyre – showed very well in the B’s coming out with the preseason victory.

HONORABLE MENTION: After a so-so season with the Providence Bruins, this was going to be a big training camp for Zane McIntyre to push his profile back up a little bit. He did some of that on Sunday with a strong performance allowing only one goal on shots that he faced, and then stopping 11 shots in the third period and OT to help earn the shootout win. The Bruins dominated the action at the other end early in the game, which had to be factored into the performance. But McIntyre made the saves he absolutely had to including a Jayson Megna breakaway at the end of the first period after he got a couple of steps on Zdeno Chara, and a Christian Djoos wraparound attempt in the third period while protecting a 1-1 game. McIntyre looked confident, controlled his rebounds and showed some good technique and athleticism on a couple of the stops.

BY THE NUMBERS: 4 – the number of giveaways for rookie defenseman Connor Clifton in a bit of a tough afternoon wearing Black and Gold at TD Garden for the first time.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “It was good. It was good…the feeling. I didn’t know what to do. I was there like ‘Oh my god, I scored. What to do now?’ So it was a nice feeling.” –Bruins third-round pick Jakub Lauko on scoring a goal in his first game at TD Garden in a Bruins uniform.
