Celtics hosting youth basketball clinic for select students

BRIGHTON -- The Boston Celtics will host a youth basketball clinic today for select students from the Edgerley Boys and Girls Club.

The 40 students, chosen by Xfinity and staffers at the Edgerley B&G Club, will be led through a series of basketball-related activities by Boston’s Aron Baynes and Daniel Theis.

In addition to the basketball clinic, the students will also get an exclusive tour of the Celtics brand new practice facility, the Auerbach Center at New Balance Headquarters.

It will also be a chance for the students to meet a couple of players who will figure prominently in Boston’s quest to continue moving beyond the success they enjoyed this past season in advancing to the Eastern Conference finals.

Baynes, a part-time starter/full-time elite defender for Boston, made no secret about his desire to return to Boston this summer after becoming an unrestricted free agent. And the Celtics, echoing similar sentiments, signed the veteran center to a two-year, $11 million contract that includes a player option for the second year.

Theis, who suffered a season-ending torn meniscus injury in March, has been on the recovery trail for weeks and appears on target to be back on the floor at the start of training camp.

The 6-foot-9 German forward/center was a relative unknown when Boston signed him last summer as a free agent.

Theis would go on to become one of the more pleasant surprises for the Celtics, averaging 5.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game during his rookie season while shooting 54.1 percent from the field.
