ARLINGTON -- Breaking news from Texas, where the Red Sox open up a series against the Rangers: Carl Crawford hasn't really been trying.

Boston's sometimes-outfielder said via Twitter that a high volume of requests for him to stop being terrible (batting .179 in his last eight games) has motivated him.

While the Tweet sensitive to fantasy baseball is no promise to make good on his end of the 7-year, 142 million deal, the effort to 'give 'er a try' seems a step in the right direction.

Terry Francona responded by smiting his forehead.

"If I had known we had to ask him to hit the ball, I would have done it."

Teammate Dustin Pedroia's response is not fit to print.
