Ex-Herald writer George Kimball dies at 67

BOSTON --Longtime Boston Herald sports columnist and boxing writer George Kimball has died of esophageal cancer at age 67.Kimball'swife, Marge Marash, tells the Associated Press that Kimball died at hishome in New York City on Wednesday night. Kimball worked for thenewspaper from 1980 to 2005, and wrote and edited several books aboutboxing, including "Four Kings."Kimball was diagnosed with cancershortly after he retired. In an appreciation written for the Herald onThursday, former colleague Michael Gee noted that in the years afterthe diagnosis, Kimball had five books published as an author or editor.Gee wrote that Kimball didn't fight cancer, "he did something better. He ignored it."No funeral was planned. Kimball's wife says a memorial will be held at a later date.
