Marchand avoids suspension for hit on Emelin

Brendan Shanahan, the NHL's chief of discipline, announced via Twitter Thursday afternoon that Brad Marchand would not be suspended for his hit on Alexei Emelin in the Bruins' 4-3 shootout victory over the Canadiens Wednesday night.

"Like all penalties on the ice, not all 'clips' rise to the level of supplemental discipline," said Shanahan. "This check by Marchand was delivered to the upper thighhip and not the knee area. We don't like it, but there will be no supplemental discipline."

Earlier Thursday, Bruins coach Claude Julien said he didn't think Marchand deserved a suspension.

My eyes saw Marchands butt hit the other guys butt," said Julien. "Clipping and a suspension is going after a guys knees. Thats the way I saw it and Im hoping the league sees it the same way."

They did.

Agent says Gordon Hayward is unlikely to return this season

Gordon Hayward had surgery on his left ankle Wednesday night.

While there was hope he could return, Hayward's agent told Adrian Wojnarowski that the Celtics forward is unlikely to play for the remainder of the season.

MORE:

Hayward suffered a dislocated ankle and fractured tibia in the first quarter of Boston’s 102-99 loss at Cleveland on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-8 All-Star landed awkwardly on his ankle after a lob pass by Kyrie Irving was deflected by LeBron James.

“We’re expecting this to be a full recovery,” Celtics head coach Brad Stevens said Wednesday, “No timeline on it but a full recovery.”
