Mazz: Jets defense is relatively mediocre

Any time Rex Ryan brings his hype machine to Gillette it means fans will be subjected to an inordinate amount of blustering and hot air.

But the reality is, this year's version of the Jets is different from the ones that used to embody Ryan's swagger and intimidation.

Earlier on Friday, Felger and Mazz discussed the New York defense and what it looks like without Darrelle Revis.

"This is a good spot for them," said Felger. "This is a good time to get the Jets."

A pretty tame response compared to what Mazz had to say.

"I can't see any way that the Jets win this game. And I said the same thing last week about Seattle and it bit me in the ass. But here's the difference, the Jets don't have the defense Seattle does. Not anymore. It is not nearly the dominating and imposing defense it was two years ago. In fact, I think it's relatively mediocre. I think the Patriots are going to have their way offensively."

The New England secondary was shredded by a rookie quarterback last week, so it's likely the Jets will put up some points, even though they've been wildly inconsistent on that front all season. But it doesn't seem likely that the New York defense will be able to slow down the Patriots on offense, so any ground they make up against a porous secondary is likely to be wiped out on the other side of the ball.
