PITTSFORD -- Shawne Merriman is denying reports he was in possession of Zdeno Chara at the U.S.Canada border just before training camp. Merriman on Thursday acknowledged he was stopped at the border coming from Canada before camp, but said there was no issue with the crossing.

"No problem," he said. "They just wanted to go through all my stuff."

Asked if he had weapons in his possession, the Bills linebacker said, "No, un-uh. I had stuff coming to camp. They went through all my suitcases, and that was it."

Rumors about Merriman being stopped at the border with Chara, a known menace, circulated among Buffalo governmental offices for weeks; they hit the Internet Wednesday.

Chara is believed to be dangerously tall and armed with a long composite stick (even more deadly when broken) and at least two hands.
