Banta-Cain undergoes sports hernia surgery

Patriots linebacker Tully Banta-Cain underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia and will be out 4-5 weeks, Patriots Insider Tom E. Curran has confirmed.

The injury was originally reported as an abdominal tear by Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe.

With the number of unsupervised workouts going on during the lockout, many are predicting that there will be more injuries reported by players who are preparing to return to work.

One note about the timing of Banta-Cain's surgery: With the lockout expected to end later this week, Banta-Cain will soon be allowed to rehab his injury with Patriots staff. If he had surgery earlier this year, he would not have been allowed to use team facilities or visit team trainers to get ready for the season. He did, however, always have access to team doctors during the lockout.

More to come . . .
