[Lede about how Bill Belichick typically doesn’t give good interviews.]
Well he did in this case, as he discussed a number of topics during a lengthy interview with CNBC in which he got up and sang the national anthem with a restaurant full of people.
Yet the most interesting part of the interview may have been a word-association segment in which Suzy Welch rattled off a list of things and had Belichick respond. Among the things presented were Deflategate and Aaron Hernandez.
Here’s a full transcription of that segment:
Football: “More sport than business, but it’s a business. But I respect the game for the game and for the sport.”
Media: “It’s how a team connects to its fans.”
Deflategate: “Ridiculous.”
Aaron Hernandez: “Tragedy.”
Welch then called it “heartbreaking,” to which Belichick replied, “Yes. That would be another word.”
The word association ended in Sheenville.
New England Patriots
Winning: “The goal. There’s no medals for trying. This isn’t like eighth grade where everybody gets a trophy. We’re in a professional sport and it’s competitive to win. That’s what we do.”
