Also, wide receiver Julian Edelman was among the more than one dozen players on the 90-man roster who were missing. Chris Hogan, Keshawn Martin, Donald Brown, DJ Foster, Bryce Williams, Jonathan Cooper, Logan Ryan, Rob Ninkovich, Anthony Johnson, Frank Kearse and Jonathan Freeny were also not present.
Players on the physically unable to perform list -- Danny Amendola, Dion Lewis, Sebastian Vollmer and Tre' Jackson -- were missing as well.
Edelman returned to practice on Wednesday after leaving Tuesday's joint session with the Saints when he aggravated his surgically-repaired left foot. He participated in Wednesday's work but was limited.
Ninkovich suffered a torn triceps on Tuesday and is expected to miss several weeks. Martin, Brown and Foster have been present at recent practices but have not participated in team work. Meanwhile, Hogan, Ryan and Freeny have all worn red non-contact jerseys in recent practices, helping to explain their absences for preseason game No. 1.
Rob Gronkowski was in full uniform for warmups but he was not wearing the protective arm pad on his left arm he typically wears before games. He has not played in a preseason game since 2012.
