J. Kraft on Floyd acquisition: Belichick decided that it made sense

FOXBORO -- Jonathan Kraft reiterated some of the sentiments that Bill Belichick has expressed since claiming Michael Floyd off of waivers: It was a football decision.

The Patriots acquired the former Cardinals wideout last week, just days after he was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Scottsdale, Arizona. Earlier this week, video of Floyd's arrest was released, backing up what was listed in the police report of the incident -- that he was asleep behind the wheel of his SUV and had significant difficulty complying with officer commands.

Though little time had elapsed between Floyd's arrest, his release from the Cardinals and his acquisition by the Patriots, the 6-foor-3, 220-pounder provides the Patriots depth at a position of need. he is in uniform Saturday and is expected to see his first playing time as a member of Belichick's club.

"Bill decided, looking at all of the variables, that it made sense for our football team at this time of the year," Kraft said. "That's why Michael Floyd is here and will be in uniform today."

Asked if the Patriots would have claimed Michael Floyd had they seen the video of his recent arrest, Jonathan Kraft said he didn't want to deal in hypotheticals. Kraft explained that he had not seen the video, and by Saturday he had only seen parts of the video.

"We didn't have it at the time," Kraft said. "The decision was made at the time with the variables that were known at the time . . . Talked about it last week, and Bill made the decision that he thought was the right one for our football team."

Kraft added: "Look, anybody, regardless of what your position is in life or what your profession is, you should not drive while intoxicated or impaired in any way . . . You should not drive while you're impaired. Unfortunately throughout our society in lots of areas people still do that, and I think . . . it speaks for itself what's in the video. We made a decision a week ago and Michael Floyd is a part of our football team."
