Rex Ryan hit on a few questionable acquisitions last season -- Santonio Holmes and LaDanian Tomlinson, to name a couple -- but right now, the gamble Ryan and the Jets took on Plaxico Burress looks like a swing and a miss.

Burress, who was signed at the start of training camp, will be shut down until Wednesday after aggravating an ankle injury during practice Thursday, according to the New York Daily News. He's scheduled to have an MRI and will miss the team's first preseason game of the season on Monday against the Texans. He won't even fly to Houston with the Jets because there's a fear his ankle could bothered on the flight.

Burress, 34, is trying to return to football after spending two years in prison and has not shown an ability to withstand even the most basic training camp activities. He has not practiced regularly, and the reps he has taken haven't been at full speed.

At this rate, it's hard to believe that the Jets can count on him to start the season. He hasn't been tackled in a game situation in almost three years, and he still can't stay on the field. Yet, Burress is currently listed on the Jets' depth chart as a starting wide receiver, alongside Holmes and ahead of newly signed veteran wideout Derrick Mason.
