Jets sign DL Anthony Johnson off Patriots practice squad

FOXBORO -- The lone Patriots player missing from Wednesday's shells-and-sweats practice, active or on the practice squad, was penetrating defensive tackle Anthony Johnson.

The reason? The 6-foot-2, 295-pounder was signed off of the Patriots practice squad by the Jets earlier in the day.

Johnson made the active roster to start the season after putting together an impressive training camp. Since then he's been released, signed to the practice squad, promoted to the active roster, released again, and re-signed to the practice squad.

It's been a Ross Ventronian existence for the LSU product, but he made an impact for the Patriots in the 74 snaps he saw in four games. He recorded two quarterback hits, one hurry and eight tackles this season. Perhaps his most significant contribution came during a goal-line stand in a win over the Bengals back in Week 6.

The Patriots now have one open spot on their 10-man practice squad.

One other note from Wednesday's workout: Rookie corner Jonathan Jones, who was absent from Tuesday's practice in full pads, was on the practice field Wednesday.
