Patriots lacking at safety after cutting Sanders

Meriweather has taken a lot of heat this preseason for not living up to his Pro Bowl status in the Patriots secondary.

Our Patriots Insider Tom E. Curran commented on Meriweather's play, and what the Pats might do with him, during training camp:

"With Meriweather entering the final year of his contract, it may make sense for the Patriots to deal him now. He's made two Pro Bowl appearances but is not a Pro Bowl caliber player. He will no doubt attempt to max out in the coming offseason based on his resume and the Patriots -- who have at times relegated him to non-starting roles -- will not be paying max money to keep him. Now may be the time to get something in return for his imminent departure."
